Topic "Welcome" a message from JonMon

Hello Lee,
I've just registered yesterday, but can't seem to post a question.
It's about the Horizon range in Antique Bronze with metal rocker switches, I purchased this range about 18-24 months ago and was looking to buy some more to complete the rest of the rooms in my house.
When enquiring about this at a wholesalers I was told this range no longer comes with metal rocker switches, plastic only. Is this correct?
As when I'm looking at the range on the Focus website, they still show them as having metal rocker switches.

Many Thanks

John Monahan

Topic "Installation, Warranty and Commissioning of HAL" a message from LeeFry

Installation, Warranty and Commissioning of HAL systems

The HAL digital lighting control system is specifically designed to be a user, installer and supplier

friendly range of products that can be installed by any qualified electrical contractor.

Installation of the HAL control panel, control plates and associated power and data cabling must be

carried out by a qualified electrical contractor.

The HAL system is designed to be a cost effective installation enabling the installer to self-commission

the system without the need for a Focus SB engineer being present.

In order for the Focus SB one year warranty to apply, the installation of the HAL system must be

carried out in accordance with the recommendations in both the HAL installation guide and in

conjunction with applicable current national and local legislative and building control requirements.

Focus SB offer an optional manufacturers on-site commissioning and programming service. Whilst not

essential on smaller installations this service can be of specific benefit on larger and more complex

installations or premises and where there are non standard and custom programming requirements.

Should the HAL customer choose the commissioning option they will have the re-assurance that their

specific installation will been checked and qualified as being operationally satisfactory by Focus SB.

The end user should be present during the commissioning procedure. The engineer will be happy to

discuss any operational questions and specific programming requirements.

Our current charges for on-site commissioning are £525-00 plus vat per full day attendance. Part day

commissioning will be charged pro-rata with a minimum charge of £263.00 plus vat. Off-site parking

and overnight accommodation (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the above figures. Should

the commissioning procedure take longer than the quoted time, subsequent visits to site will be

charged in addition to the original figure and at the same rate. Your order for commissioning should

be placed with a Focus SB distributor at the same time as the system order.

HAL system commissioning will be carried out on the understanding that the installing contractor has

previously connected all system Cat5 data cables, applicable lighting power circuits and optional

circuits, such as electronic blinds, curtains, blinds, shutters, gates, projector screens and other power

circuits in to the HAL control panel/panels and control plates.

All Cat5 data, lighting and additional power circuits to be controlled by the HAL control panel/panels

must be seen to be connected and operable before our engineer can commission the system.

It is the responsibility of the installer to make sure that any optional or additional circuits to be

interfaced are fully compatible with the HAL system. If unsure please contact our sales office with full

technical and circuit details of proposed items to be used.

Focus SB engineers are authorised and insured to work only within the HAL control panel/panels and

control plates. They cannot connect any part of the HAL system to power circuits that are external to

the HAL system equipment. These connections must be made by the installing contractor.

Our commissioning engineers may not be able to proceed with the commissioning procedure if any of

the above conditions are not met. The installer will then be recommended to re-book a new and

chargeable appointment through the supplying distributor.

Download as PDF below.

Setting Scenes with HAL IR4-4 8 Button Master Control

Right-hand buttons

These are the 4 channel (or circuit) buttons. Each of the right-hand button raises and lowers the illumination level of a single connected lighting circuit or can be used to turn circuit on or off.
To adjust the level of a channel (or circuit), press and hold the selected button – the light level will raise and then lower in slow succession - release the button once the desired level has been achieved. If desired ‘double-clicking’ the selected button during the raising and lowering of light levels will quickly change direction of level raising or lowering - again releasing the button once desired lighting level has been achieved.
To turn a lighting circuit on or off – press the selected channel button momentarily and the lighting will turn on or off.

Left-hand buttons

These are the Scene (or Mood) buttons.
Topic "Guide: Setting the HAL-REM Infra-Red Handset" a message from LeeFry

Setting the HAL-REM Infra-Red Handset

The HAL REM Infra-Red Handset enables the user to recall lighting settings that have previously been stored into the HAL IR4-4 8 button master control plate from any ‘line of sight’ position within the room being controlled. By pointing the HAL-Rem directly at the infra-red receiver of the HAL IR4-4 Master Control Plate the user is also able to program settings directly into the HAL system in a similar way to how they originally programmed the HAL IR4-4 Master Control Plate.

Centre Scene Buttons SC1 to SC4

The left hand scene buttons of the HAL IR4-4 Master Control Plate are replicated by selecting one of the grey buttons SC1, SC2, SC3 & SC4 on the infra-red remote handset. To turn selected scene off either press scene button once more or press the handset OFF button.

Numeric Keypad Buttons 1 to 8

The right hand channel (or circuit) buttons of the Master Control Plate are replicated by the lower grey numeric buttons 1, 2, 3 & 4 on the handset. If using the HAL remote control for multi-channel installations (i.e. more than 4 channels) the * button on the numeric keypad is pressed to access these additional channels and the respective channel number on the numeric keypad is pressed to select (the * button ‘bumps’ the individual channel level buttons on the remote handset up from channels 1 - 8 to channels 9 – 16)

Additional Scenes

The grey centre round button when pressed ‘bumps’ the selected scenes up from no’s 1 - 4 to no’s 5 - 8. This gives an additional 4 scenes that are ONLY accessible from the HAL infra-red handset. These additional scenes are not indicated on the HAL IR4-4 Master Control Plate.
To access these additional scenes press the centre round grey button followed by scene button 1 and you will then access scene 5, the channels can be adjusted and scene 5 can be stored. Press round grey button and scene button 2 and you will access to scene 6, again storing a scene in the same manner (repeat for scenes 7 & 8). These scenes are normally factory set to cover all channels and will lower in steps from scene 5 to scene 8.
The ON button of the remote handset brings ALL scenes on to FULL, and all led’s will illuminate. This can be used as a cleaning switch, panic button or simply or ‘full-on’ level.

These settings can be copied into a suitable ‘intelligent and learning’ remote control handset if required. This enables the user to perhaps only use one handset where previously several different remotes may have been used.

Note The HAL system & infra-red remote handset uses RC5 codes. There is an RS232 protocol available with an interface pcb as an extra cost option if required. This is useful if you wish to operate the HAL system using third party control equipment such as a PC or Touch screen etc.

Download as PDF below, also available is the operations guide for the handset.
edited by LeeFry on 06/01/2010

These codes can be 'learnt' off the HAL infra-red remote handset by many 'one-for-all' infra-red remote handsets.

Additionally 'intelligent' remote controls such as the Philips Pronto and Logitech Harmony ranges of touch screen remotes can also be used.
For example the Philips Pronto 'talks' to the wireless router - the router 'talks' to the interface, the interface 'talks' to the magic eye and sends out multiple IR streams previously learnt from original handsets.
Macros can also be created so that a push from one button in the intelligent remote creates multiple events across several products.

What is RS232?

RS232 is a commonly used computer protocol or language used by many control systems.

Can RS232 be used with HAL?

Yes, There is an interface board available if required.
Topic "FAQ: Trailing edge or leading edge dimmers" a message from LeeFry

Can HAL be used with trailing edge or leading edge dimmers

HAL is a leading edge dimmer that will drive leading edge compatible transformers.
Most electronic transformers currently available are suitable for leading and trailing edge operation.
Trailing edge dimming is used more frequently in Europe - leading edge tends to be used more in the UK.

Advantages

Some people specify trailing edge dimming because it operates without the buzzing of some leading edge dimmers.
This is only an issue generally with 'plate' dimmers. HAL being a remote dimming pack with 0 -10 volt cabling does not have noise issues.
Leading edge dimmers (such as we use with HAL) is a less complex product and is more efficient in terms of running cost.
edited by LeeFry on 20/07/2009
